Who is in charge of Personal Pathways to Success?

The implementation of Personal Pathways is being managed by the EEDA Coordinating Council, a government appointed panel made up of representatives of the business, education and legislative communities.

Will this initiative limit my child’s options?

Personal Pathways provides all public school students in South Carolina with the resources to identify, explore and develop an education plan to attain their career and employment goals. Students will be given every opportunity to pursue any career path they choose.

Hopefully, through this initiative, students will become aware of all the professional possibilities that exist and will realize there are careers that can marry their abilities with their ambitions.

When will my child choose a cluster of study? Can my child change clusters?

Students will choose a cluster of study in the 8th grade based on their interests, aspirations and abilities. In the 10th grade, students will declare one or more majors based on their chosen cluster of study. Students are free to change their cluster if their interests change. Students will have the ability to review and revise their Individual Graduation Plans annually with their guidance counselors and parents or parental designees.

Can my child pick more than one major?

With careful planning beginning in the 9th grade, it is possible to complete more than one major.

Will my child be assigned to a different school?

School assignment will not be affected by Personal Pathways. However, high school students may choose to attend a different school within their district if their assigned school does not offer their preferred cluster of study.

What options does my child have if his assigned school does not offer his preferred cluster?

High school students may choose to attend a different school if their assigned school does not offer their preferred cluster of study. A school transfer must be limited to within the student’s assigned district. Transportation dollars are included and a plan is in place to provide for students who transfer to schools within their districts in order to follow their preferred cluster of study.

Will private school students be exposed to Personal Pathways?

Personal Pathways is a public school initiative. However, private school graduates who attend public colleges or universities in South Carolina will be exposed to Personal Pathways.

As a parent, what can I do to ensure this initiative is successful?

Here are some ways parents or parental designees can make a difference:

  • Encourage your children to pursue their aspirations through continuous personal and professional development.
  • Explore all post-high school education and career paths with your children.
  • Provide input and guidance as your children plan and prepare for post-secondary study, further training and employment.
  • Ask your children’s school about ways your children can take advantage of the opportunities available through Personal Pathways.
  • Talk to other parents about Personal Pathways or become an Ambassador and spread the word about this exciting initiative.
